In 2020 we will mark the Year of the Rat with Chinese New Year celebrations. Chinese New Year is an amazing mix of traditional cultural activities from the ceremonial awakening of the dragon through to the dragon and lion dance and the ever-present firecrackers.
The fuse is lit on the annual Chinese New Year celebrations with a cacophony of sound generated in beautiful Buss Park signalling the start of the official celebration.
Japanese Taiko drummers, clashing cymbals interspersed with the booming sounds of gongs provides the accompaniment to the PCYC Blazers as they energetically present the traditional Lion and Dragon Dance. Firecrackers add to the occasion and as the smoke clears it’s party time in the main street of Bundaberg.
Dozens of merchandise and food stalls will cater to those who want to purchase a “Year of the Rat” memento or simply enjoy a meal from the amazing blend of Asian cuisine available.
The diversity of entertainment ensures there is something for everyone to enjoy. A traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony at the School of Arts or perhaps a game of Mahjong in the Civic Centre is your cup of tea!
A great activity to engage the little ones is a Chinese Zodiac Animal Trail which involves 12 activities and prizes for those who complete the game.
Several sessions involving artists from Nanning presenting dance, acrobatics and opera are held at the nearby Moncrieff Entertainment Centre. This is absolutely stunning world-class entertainment with free admission. Check programs for performance times.
As darkness covers the main street, a traditional Lantern Parade gets underway providing a delightful cultural experience. A fireworks display brings a fitting end to an event that continues to illuminate the close relationship that exists between our region and our Chinese friends.
