John Rotar presents ‘ave’, an electronic music composition of Gregorian chant which uses the music from five different Marian prayers.
Mary is the Christian embodiment of the redeeming mother, an image which appears across the world and image which also has the allegory of mother earth and the universe being the mother and womb of us all.
The prayers ask for protection, redemption, to grant us mercy and peace and ask simply to save us. These are things we tend to avoid thinking about but things that we increasingly need in our tumultuous modern world.
Now as we are all isolated these disembodied sounds of electronics reach out so we can experience togetherness through music and the common image of redemption.
‘ave’ has been rescored for live accompaniment by the Bundaberg Sinfonietta. The event will include up to 30 live artists on stage and will be conducted by John Rotar.
Growing up in a musical family, John’s passion for music started at an early age. After starting piano at the age of six, he turned his hand to composition at nine, and at twelve had his first orchestral work performed by the Bundaberg Youth Orchestra.
Since then John has had his works performed and commissioned by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Southern Cross Soloists, The Australian Voices, Australian Youth Orchestra, Michael Kieran Harvey, Queensland Youth Orchestras, Flinders String Quartet, and the UQ Symphony Orchestra, among others and has garnered such awards as the 2013 Queensland Wagner Society National Composition Prize, the 2014 Fanfare Artology Prize, 2015 Percy Brier Memorial Prize and the 2016 Jean Bogan Youth Prize.
John holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours, graduating from The University of Queensland in 2016 and is currently working towards a Doctorate in composition at UQ under the supervision of Dr Robert Davidson.
