A bold new take on the beloved classic!

Building on the legacy of the previous film adaptation while incorporating elements of the stage musical, The Color Purple is a crowd-pleasing testament to resilience in the face of trauma.

Much more than a remake, the musical film version of The Color Purple stands on its own as a vibrant, uplifting experience - and the singing and dancing are superb.

It tells the story of Celie, an African American woman living in the American South during the early 1900s. Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband. With support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and A Gentlemen) and Fantasia Barrino (American Idol) in her film debut.

The Color Purple features as part of our weekend of filmed stage musicals.
